Back to Birthday Season

The leaves are changing and the temperatures are dropping, which - in this house - means it's time to start getting ready for all the holidays and birthday celebrations you can possibly imagine. 4/6 grandparents, 2 uncles, 1 daddy, 2 little boys, and 3 anniversaries! Not to mention Halloween, Guy Fawkes Night, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Welcome to my busiest 3 1/2 months of the year.

So how did we kick things off? The annual pumpkin picking expedition, of course!

Let it not go unsaid: trying to pick pumpkins with 4 rambunctious boys under 4 is stressful, even under the best of conditions.

Now, I'm on to E's birthday party, and this year he's requested a How To Train Your Dragon theme. I have foam Viking helmets, a "happy birthday" banner that looks like old Viking manuscripts, HTTYD colouring sheets, and - of course - costumes for the birthday boy and his brother. E will be Hiccup and T will be Toothless...rather appropriately, since - like his brother - he's nearly a year old and still has no teeth coming in. Hey: if it means that teething is as easy and quick with him as it was with his brother, I'm not complaining!

via, Tried and True Blog
I've been all over Pinterest using ideas like the above to cobble together my own version of costumes for the boys. 8 metres of faux fur ribbon, 1 metre of felt fabric, 2 wire coat hangers, and a borrowed sewing machine later, I have achieved success. I consider that no mean feat when I remember that I haven't sewn anything in about 10 years. Seriously. My last sewing project was my senior prom dress with a youth leader from our church at the time.

Of course, I have now been admonished no less than 5 times by E that I musn't forget his birthday cake. Thank you, Thor, it's nowhere near as complicated as the cake I made him last year! This time, he's just asked for it to be blue and green. I can handle that.

The First Few Days

So it's been about 11 days now since we finally got to say hello to our new little boy. The whole thing has been a brilliant experience so far. I have to admit, this whole taking-care-of-a-small-human thing feels a lot easier the second time around. It helps that E is such an affectionate big brother. He always wants to hold and kiss and cuddle and carry his baby brother. The only time this gets to be a problem is when he's convinced that he can carry the baby around the house without any assistance. Yup, I did spend part of the morning chasing the boys around the house, trying to keep my hands around Tristan while Ethan did his level best to wander off with his brother.

So what have we been up to besides changing nappies and chasing little boys?

  • A James Bond marathon: Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, and Skyfall. Complete with pizza, chips, and lots of fizzy drinks.
  • A few walks around the neighbourhood: one to the playground and another to relax with a hot cocoa at Costa.
  • Rewatching old seasons of The Unit over dinners: sausages & egg fried rice, chicken kievs and creamy potatoes, and frozen pizza. We've been keeping it simple for now.
  • One expenditure of actual effort in order to have blueberry pancakes for brunch. Like the most interesting man in the world, I don't always cook breakfast, but when I do it's because I want pancakes.
  • Being weirdly fascinated by being able to say things like, "let's take the boys to the playground" or "it's going to take a bit longer to get the kids in the car."
  • Catching up on Pinterest, Twitter, and the blogs whenever I have sleeping children.
My latest discovery on that last one? I win Pinterest...at least in the scarf department. My Christmas present to myself was a plaid blanket scarf from Zara, which has been showing up all over Pinterest lately. Just have a look:

For now, though, it's back to those nappies that need changing, babies that need feeding, and the 95th viewing of Finding Nemo. Oh yeah, and these beauties. So glad to have the owner of these baby blues back in the house after visiting his grandparents for the weekend...

Around the World

I love globes. I think they look fantastic on display and just have a certain je ne sais quoi on a shelf or atop a bookcase. I've been quietly on the lookout for one for ages now. Much as I have an aversion to needless clutter, globes (and pottery) are something I would happily collect. Here are a few displays that have caught my eye:

2) Birch and Bird

The Devil's in the Details

At times like this when it's not really practical to do much clothes shopping, I do tend to turn my attention to all the little details and accessories I could use to alter and augment my look instead. After all; earrings will still work and scarves will still coordinate whether I'm 7 months pregnant or 6 weeks postpartum.

So what sorts of little trinkets am I looking forward to possibly gifting myself with this Christmas?

1) I'm a sucker for plaid and I love this scarf from Zara. If I could have button-down shirts and throw blankets in this sort of plaid, too, I'd be on it all in a heartbeat.

2) Much as I tend to have my mobile in my pocket, it feels like a very grown-up thing to have a proper watch to wear...and I'm pretty picky about watches. This Wanderlust watch from Feral would be loads of fun, and just slim enough in the band not to get on my nerves.

3) I don't usually go in for cocktail rings, but when I spotted this one from Crave Jewelry over on Diana's blog, I had to admit it looked pretty cute. And I like a nice way to add some pops of colour to my wardrobe...especially in the winter, and especially when I keep finding myself drawn to lots of greys and other neutrals in my clothes.

4) Seriously, I don't know what it was that made me change my mind so much about leopard print. These Russell & Bromley shoes would be a lovely addition once my feet are down to a normal size again!

5) This Anna Joyce clutch is gorgeous. Yes, I'll be spending most of my time toting nappy bags around over the coming months, but for those times when I can get away with nothing but a clutch, something like this would do the job perfectly.

6)  I've been loving my new necklace from Edor Jewelry. Anyone who's been following me on Twitter or Instagram has caught sight of my snaps of it...I've been wearing it most days lately. I'm getting in all the wear I can before it has to be traded in for a while in favour of more baby-friendly jewelry!

Anything you've been coveting lately? I'd love to hear about it in the comments!

(A Belated) Mommy Monday: Pregnancy Style

It's been far too long since I've done one of these. To be honest, I've really let this sort of thing go during this pregnancy. The first time around, you don't have anything at all, so you know that you'll be spending the time and the money to find things that will fit you as you expand over the coming months. The second time around, though, you're only replacing things that wore through the first time, or perhaps adding in pieces for a different season.

I, however, will be having my second boy in a season not too dissimilar from my first, so aside from a pair of new maternity jeans and replacing a good bra, there wasn't too much that I really needed to have this time around. Plus, when you're spending most of the time chasing a toddler as well as gestating a new person, there are times where what energy you have left just doesn't go towards looking your best. Lately, though, I've wanted to change that.

Outfit 1)
  Top: Mamas & Papas
  Scarf: Vienna Naschmarkt
  Cardigan: Mistral
  Jeans: H&M
  Boots: Clarks

I loved this outfit when I discovered I could put it together. It suddenly felt so effortless to look like my usual self that I wondered why I hadn't made the extra few minutes' effort sooner. And I love anything that allows me to find a way to work in non-maternity pieces. That way, my wardrobe feels more versatile and I can save money not buying things I can only ever wear when I'm 6 months gone or more!

Outfit 2)
  Scarf: Bath Fashion Museum
  Jumper: Next
  Jeans: Mamas & Papas
  Wellies: Debenhams

I'm a sucker for big scarves. This was a birthday present to myself on our trip to Bath the other year. The giant fluffy layers of mint and cream polka dots are fun and they nicely add a pop of colour to what is quickly becoming a very neutral-heavy wardrobe. The jumper is one I snagged in the Boxing Day sales on our first Christmas after getting married. I loved it when I saw it, then hardly wore it since. This pregnancy, I seem to have rediscovered my love for it, and I'm sure it'll be making many more appearances before the end of the year.

Outfits 3)
  Top: Laura Ashley
  Gillet: Target
  Leggings: Sainsbury's
  Socks: M&S
  Boots: Clarks

I took E out yesterday to do a bit of shopping (we needed blank cards for all the birthdays rapidly approaching) and decided to make a pit stop into Laura Ashley. When I saw this top on the 60% off rack, I had to try it on. Not only was it a steal, but even in my usual size it accommodates my bump nicely; meaning it works usually, maternity, and during the infamous and transitional Fourth Trimester.

Speaking of the fourth trimester, I have a special place in my heart for the Fourth Trimester Bodies project. It's our right to feel how we want about our bodies, but I love projects like this for reminding us that feeling ashamed or inadequate shouldn't be the assumed condition for everyone. There's a much wider spectrum to what's normal and beautiful than we sometimes give credit for.

The Lazy Girl's Guide to Birthdays

A week when you're seven months pregnant and watching your toddler alone because your husband is out of the country on business is not an ideal week to plan and prep for a birthday party. Especially not when you've had no motivation to even settle on a theme for the previous month. So what did I do? Settled on a few projects, kept the guest list small, and never turned down an offer of help.

My big project was going to be the cake. Given E's current obsession with Thomas the Tank Engine, I thought a train theme was the one to finally settle on, and his favourite engine at the moment is Percy. The Husband managed to talk me into a 3D cake rather than a simple sheet cake silhouette, so I decided to run with it.

In the spirit of keeping it simple, I bought a Swiss roll, two boxes of Betty Crocker red velvet mix, two boxes of cream cheese icing, and a few tubes of writing icing and food dye. On Tuesday night, I baked my two lots of cake mix: one in a flat 9x12" tin and the other in a small loaf tin. Once they were out and cooled, they were wrapped in cling film and put in the freezer.

Wednesday night brought another project as I took a break from the cake: hanging streamers. After a brief and unsuccessful quest to find crepe paper streamers at a local store, I decided to make it easier on myself and just order things online.

So, with E in bed and Simon Pegg saving Gloucestershire in the background, I got my streamers hung from the ceiling. The next afternoon saw the balloons inflated and hung so that, by Thursday night, I was ready to crack on with the cake.

With all the separate cakes frozen, it was easy to get straight lines when I cut the pieces I needed without creating too many crumbs in the process. Then, it was time to quickly spread on the crumb coating: just enough icing to catch most of the crumbs and stick everything together. Finally, assembled, the whole thing went back into the fridge to be properly frosted and decorated on Friday night.

That's when things started to go downhill. The red dye for the bottom of the cake worked a treat, but the green dye that I needed for most of the cake made the frosting incredibly runny. There was washing on and the kitchen was getting hot: drips and dribbles of green frosting kept sliding down the sides of the cake all over the places I didn't want them to go. The whole thing was quickly becoming a gloopy mess, so I shoved it in the fridge to help everything set. Still no good. So, after half an hour of trying to salvage everything while the cake stayed in the fridge, I opted for more drastic measures and popped it in the freezer.

The freezer was just the trick: the frosting set enough for me to tidy the earlier drips and smudges without much fuss, and the writing icing for Percy's stripes and the roof of the cab stopped running as well. On Saturday morning I got everything touched up and then printed off a face on cardstock to finish the look.

We kept the rest of the decorations simple: a level crossing into the living room, a railroad sign on the closet, and a 'Snack Station' complete with two platforms for the two-year-old birthday boy. I did find, though, that by Saturday, I had a bit more energy than I'd expected, so with the Husband back to help, I left the tidying and gift bag assembly to him and decided to have a go at doing the individual seven-layer dips from The Girl Who Ate Everything. They were a huge hit!
The original: via The Girl Who Ate Everything
My attempt: not too bad.
The difference? I was too lazy to make pico de gallo and this household doesn't eat olives, so we technically had six layers instead of seven. Plus, I made proper taco meat as one layer using my own homemade taco seasoning recipe.

So, all the family (minus one brother-in-law who's over in the States at the moment) and E's BFF and her mum came round to ours for nibbles, cake, and a chance to let the toddlers run wild. My mother-in-law offered to bring crips, cake, and quiche pinwheels, which I gratefully accepted; my lovely sister-in-law Rachel brought biscuits; and Angus & Emily brought some scrummy doughnuts. This padded out our own offerings nicely since I had Organix snacks for the kids, the seven-layer dips, some frozen spring rolls that we popped into the oven, and drinks.

The kids are all a bit too little for games, so they just ran around and played with E's toys. We let them watch one or two episodes of Sarah & Duck in the slower moments of the day, and that kept them fairly happy. All in all, I'd call the day a success.

In Need of Pampering

I was reading this post on Young House Love the other day and it got me to thinking: what sorts of purchases do I consider an indulgence? I mean, aside from trips to get hot chocolate and a muffin at Starbucks. And as the list of Nice Things I Want But Don't Need started to compile itself in my mind, I thought, once again, of what this Christmas will be like.

We'll have a 2-year-old who - hopefully - gets really into the whole idea of unwrapping presents and seeing the tree lit up. I'll be doing my usual song & dance about decorating as much of the house as I can manage. Oh yeah, and I'll be massively, hugely nine months pregnant.

With that said, my main priority isn't so much a low-key Christmas, but one in which I get a little pampering before the achy, wobbly, baby-head-smelling, sleepless nights set in.

via, Just Nails
There's a place called Just Nails back in our old neighbourhood. I'd love to go, relax, and get a nice mani-pedi for an afternoon. That alone would make my day.

via, GraceandLaceCo
Of all the boot socks I pinned the other night, I think these ones from Grace & Lace Co. on Etsy are my favourite as there's no question that they're actual full socks. Plus, who can't like that lovely goldenrod colour?

via, Russell & Bromley
Russell & Bromley do lovely shoes: I have loafers and driving moccasins from them to attest to this. Alas, at the moment, between the heat and being pregnant, I can't really wear them much before my toes get squashed. That said, once things start returning to normal in the water retention department, it'd be nice to have some low-heeled leopard print for when my £7 Sainsbury's pumps meet their inevitable demise.

via, Ruby&Joy
This lavender eye pillow by Ruby&Joy is cute, and it's not even expensive! Plus, I'm in the grip of a bit of an obsession with lavender: I want to grow it, and have it in little sachets to make the drawers smell nice, and use it with rosemary to make a fun spray for the sheets or to make the house smell nice. Seriously; I need to get something lavender-smelling just to take the edge off reminiscing about our trips to lavender fields nearby.

via, Crabtree & Evelyn
The Gardeners Hand Lotion from Crabtree & Evelyn. I can't overstate how much I love this stuff. When I was buying presents for our mothers at our wedding, I snagged a bottle of this for myself on the pretense of 'taking advantage of the sale'. Since that was over 3 years ago and the hand soap I had has long since run out, I'm overdue to replace it. Or at least, that's what I'll tell myself.

via, Nigella
As I mentioned the other day on Facebook, I love my Nigella Express cookbook. When I was leafing through it yesterday evening, I was appalled that I'm not cooking more of the recipes in there. People; this is good food! And, because it's the express book, it's all pretty easy. That said, I will look forward to just relaxing if I can ask the Husband to do us up a dinner of Nigella's. Perhaps the chicken schnitzel with bacon and some macaroni cheese on the side?

So that's my list, really. Things I'd like, but don't need, that would make me all warm and fuzzy inside. And outside too, if we're talking about those awesome boot socks. For now, though, it may be time to enjoy the rain and get my hot chocolate fix for the morning.

A Place to Begin

Happy birthday to me! In the spirit of celebrating the anniversary of my birth, the Husband has taken the day off, and once E wakes up from his nap we're heading out to let me do a bit of shopping and then tonight it's dinner out and Star Trek: Into Darkness, with the oh-so-adorable Benedict Cumberbatch. Ginger or no ginger: he's my type. Tall, thin, pale, blue eyes, deep voice, English. Seriously people, I know I have a type...every last one of those descriptors fits my husband, too! Are you ready for 139 minutes of ogling Mr. Cumberbatch, Chris Pine, and Zachary Quinto? Because I am.

Happy. Effing. Birthday. To. Me.

So what goodies will I leave you with to peruse while I go enjoy my birthday spoils? These ones:

Goodmornings.org, via SwissMiss.
I like the idea behind this. It's such an easy thing to do to say 'good morning!' as a way to brighten your day and someone else's.

My feet have traveled plenty of places. Edinburgh, London, Salt Lake City, Rome, Venice, Copenhagen...they'll even be going to Vienna next month! I'd like to come up with a fun photo template like this to save all of the fun places we get to visit.

I do love so much of the stuff that Diana at exPress-O links to and this cute story of a trans-Atlantic relationship is really fun. I like the idea of the split screen narrative, because when such an important part of your life is so far away for so long, it really does feel like you're living in two different places at once!

Here is today is a good way to get some perspective; and I love the minimalist style of the animations and the graphs. I feel like the only thing it could possibly be missing is a .gif of Neil deGrasse Tyson giving you a thumbs-up. Let's get on that, people.

Poketo and Lisa Congdon have made tea towels! These look absolutely adorable to me and I have Poppytalk to thank for showing them to me this week. Also: no idea who Lisa Congdon is? Have a gander at some of her work...

So yes, a lot of the cute clothes I've seen lately are either specifically maternity, or are pregnant friendly. This isn't on purpose. But with a shirt as cute as this one from ASOS, surely you can justify buying it with or without a bun in the oven!?

I don't speak French, but I still loved how cute this Olive Us episode was from Design Mom. Little Red Riding Hood? Too awesome.

via BOBgear
So eventually I'd need a double buggy, but if I had my way and money was no object, this BOB jogger would be mine all mine! But then, Runner's World did give a good review of quite a few good joggers that are less likely to break the bank.

Screen Style: Modern Family

I've been watching a bunch of re-runs of Modern Family on Netflix lately over lunch. Seriously, I love that show. And so when I was casting my mind about for ideas for the next Screen Style post, this was definitely at the forefront of my mind.

The Husband and I have watched this together for ages, ever since we were introduced to it by our friend Katherine. It's become a staple of our TV watching roster and so on nights where we need to keep dinner brief to get E to bed, if we're not watching The Office, we're usually watching Modern Family.

-Gloria dress
Though it's not always occasion-appropriate, Gloria's dresses do look fabulous. I'd definitely love more occasions to dress up like that.

-Cameron's button-downs (in men's and women's options)
Cameron's button-down shirts are so much fun. They're bright and colourful, and full of patterns. The two men's options come from JCrew and Boden; the women's options are the Kingston and Maywell shirts from Joules. If you want to be a curvy, spicy diva like Cameron, this is a good place to start.

-DVD boxset
I absolutely recommend the box set or buying the episodes on iTunes for this one. That way you don't have to miss any of the BB gun-shooting, hot tub-crashing, Spiderman costume-wearing, front lawn-serinading action!

- The blue paint from Phil & Claire's entryway
I went looking on the Benjamin Moore website to try and find a colour that approximated the shade of blue in Phil & Claire Dunphy's stairway. Surprisingly, when I Googled Benjamin Moore's Colonial Blue paint, a picture of the set of Phil & Claire's place from Modern Family did show up as one of the search results. Looks like I was pretty spot-on! And this slightly chalky, almost powder blue is a fun colour in its own right. Actually, I've been thinking of painting the living room...

-Kitchy animal decor
Useful, cute, and animal-themed, this happens to have one leg up on Barkley the butler dog. I know I could use a good place to keep important or urgent reminders for the family.

-Woven hat
Andy & Evan made their first appearance on the blog in the Stylish Little Men series. Their tagline is 'for little gentlemen' and that feels so appropriate since this piece was included to get a bit of the Manny Delgado look.

- Staircase carpet runner
Pottery Barn's Enzo Medallion Dhurrie Rug comes in a 2.5'×9' version that could make a great runner on stairs or in an entryway.  If it goes on the stairs, you could get enough traction to avoid even that one slippery tread on Phil & Claire's staircase!

Stylish Little Men: Old Navy

So this week I wanted to take a look at Old Navy. Again, this is a store I've had clothes from both for me and for E. A very good friend of mine (thank you, Lauren!) bought E some onesies, a hat, gloves, and jeans from Old Navy just after he was born. I absolutely loved the look of everything, though I will say: baby skinny jeans don't work when you have a kid with cloth nappies and cute chubby thighs. Ah well, you can't win 'em all. So yeah: Old Navy's baby trousers seem to be cut a bit slim...but I can't judge every cut based on one pair of skinnies.

The prices are - as you'd expect - great. They're only just above the cheapest store I've seen (cough cough, H&M!) and pretty much on a par with places like Next. And really, all three of those stores will give you clothes of a perfectly acceptable and workable quality. None of the H&M, Next or Old Navy clothes Ethan has had have worn out prematurely or anything. At the least, I can put them on our next baby (when that time comes) before they have to be retired. So: let's get to the clothes!

Patterned dobby shirt ($16.94). The rolled-up sleeves on this shirt are a nice touch. Also, since you can dress it up or down depending on the trousers or shorts you pair with it, this shirt is a brilliant example of a wardrobe staple for little boys.
Pair it with these belted seersucker shorts and it's an absolute winner for church in the summer, or family get-togethers, or a nice picnic.

Snoopy's I Mustache You A Question Tee ($12.94). So freaking adorable. Would it be funnier with Sean Connery on it? Yes. But no kid's going to get that joke. Also: there should be one with the punchline, '...But I'll shave it for later.' That definitely requires Sean Connery to make it work, though.

The Turtle/Alligator Pyjama Set ($14.94). I love how cute this is. And we're already well-established on how much I love two-piece pyjamas.

The pique polo ($8.00). It's always nice to see a good polo for little boys. The only thing about the Gap polos I've seen is that some are quite thick, so they get stiff and cardboard-like after a season or two of wear. Plus, they tend to fit in the arms and shoulders longer than they stay long enough to cover the torso. Since Gap and Old Navy are the same company, I do wonder if this polo might suffer from the same problems. In the end, though, it's not a dealbreaker.

Octopus Baseball Cap ($7.94). Hats are always helpful during the summer to help keep the sun off of baby's delicate skin. If it has a fun pirate octopus on the front, so much the better.

Printed flip flops ($3.94). I love how cute these are. And with the strap on the back, they'll stay on baby boy's feet nicely. I sort of want my own pair of flip flops again now...

The Fashion Show In My Closet

via, Penny Pincher Fashion

Everyone has those moments where they can't think of what to wear. It's not that you don't have any clothes; you just can't find what you want to put on that fits your mood, or that you haven't worn to death lately. Speaking for the cheap-and-cheerful crowd: the solution is NOT to go out and buy yourself more clothes. That cycle will just keep repeating itself and suddenly you'll have an indecently large wardrobe that you practically never wear. The key? Learn to work with what you have. There are plenty of blogs that have posts (or are entirely) dedicated to helping women learn how to mix and match individual pieces to create outfits. A Beautiful Mess, Outfit Posts, and Putting Me Together.

I've already admitted this in a previous post, but I have to say it again. Back in uni I used to stay in my room some evenings just trying on all of my clothes. I'd empty drawers, pull hangers from the closet, and have piles of clothes on the bed and shoes on the floor. I'd dress, strip, and re-dress all in front of the mirror that hung by the door, changing outfits and individual pieces at a moment's notice. I wasn't going anywhere, I wasn't indecisive...I was just playing dress-up.

As a tween, I went through a horrible phase where I'd change outfits multiple times a day. I'd just get bored with what I had on. The first time my dad met two of my friends, I'd left them stranded on the front porch while I went upstairs to change. I got better as time went on, but I was still coming down from being the girl who could pack 12 outfits for a weekend away doing nothing.

Discontinued, but via Emerson Fry

All grown up now, I don't find that I have as much time to just sit and sort through my clothes. If you're a very visual person, like I am, it's definitely a useful exercise to get a good feel for how far your clothes will actually go. And sometimes, you find a way to get new life out of an old piece of clothing just by switching up how you'd normally wear it. The freeing thing about having your own personal fashion show is that you aren't going anywhere! It's all research and development. You have nowhere to be where you need to look fabulous, so if an outfit bombs for some reason, it's not the end of the world. And you can get as crazy as you want trying to find a look that you like!

Here are the essentials for having your own Closet Fashion Show:

1) full-length mirror
2) space to spread out your materials (an uncluttered dresser or well-made bed would do)

3) time to spare
4) some fun and relaxing music (that print is discontinued, but here's the store it comes from)

Seriously; get into the swing of things and see what new looks you can come up with using what you already have. You might surprise yourself!

A Place to Begin

Another Friday, another chance to recap the week in interesting pictures, videos, and articles. In between enjoying the year's first real sunshine here in England, I've been spending some time having fun on the Interwebs. Here are the highlights of what I've seen this week:

Dove Real Beauty Sketches. Whatever you want to say about Dove using this to sell a product they tell you will make you look/feel better about yourself, I think this does bring up a good point. We are generally our own worst critics. I wonder how negatively I would have described myself? That said, this critique of the ad raises a very fair point as well: our outer beauty shouldn't be so narrowly defined or make up a disproportionate amount of our self-worth. (Thanks to my cousin, Jen, for that second link!)

Wallpaper Wednesday at Love Chic Living. Looking for a fun new wallpaper for that room you've been meaning to redecorate? Or just want some more Pinterest fodder for that dream house you'll one day DIY to death? I high recommend taking a look at Love Chic Living's Wallpaper Wednesday column: she manages to hunt down some amazing finds. From the gorgeous and classic to the artsy or absolutely out-there, I haven't seen anything run-of-the-mill yet!

YHL's Ten Tips for Smoother Travel
I love John and Sherry at Young House Love for lots of things, but as someone who's seen her fair share of planes, I have to agree with their tips for airline travel. It's all practical stuff to think about if you're travelling a lot. Also, it makes me think of my sister's post on airports she's known. I think I could easily write a companion post to that.

via, Waterstones
Marillenbaum's review of Life After Life
Speaking of my sister, go read her review of this book...like, now. And then, go read the book, too, because it sounds awesome. Also, I'd suggest that you cry because you'll never write about another person's book as well as she did. I substituted the crying for some expletive-filled praise, and I think it worked just as well.

via, Swiss-Miss
The Mountain Range pillow. From Three Bad Seeds, on Etsy, for those cute outdoor spaces, populated with Adirondack chairs and plaid flannel blankets that are just asking for that little something extra. (I now not only want this pillow, but to fulfill my dream of a plaid-blanketed Adirondack chair!)

A Gift Stash. The lovely blog You Are My Fave has such cute ideas: and this one is practical to boot. Though I don't know that I wouldn't snag Fantastic Mr. Fox and that game of Bananagrams for myself...

This ASOS midi skirt with pockets looks so stupidly fun to wear. I even have the 3/4-sleeve striped shirt to pair with it. I'm a sucker for dresses and skirts with pockets. It means I don't have to carry a purse just to keep my mobile phone and Burt's Bees on me! (Seriously; aside from the occasion bits of change, tissue, or E's binky, that's all I ever have in my pockets.)

Boyish, manly, well-drawn, hilarious, and occasionally wildly inappropriate. That's what I love about the prints in Sharp Writer's Epic Art Store on Etsy. My personal favourite? Bill Clinton The Lady Killer. It's all about the details...Ronald McDonald with a rocket launcher!? A crocodile with a bomb strapped to it!? Bill's fly is undone and everything...he even worked in the saxophone! I believe this deserves the hashtag #sowrongitsright.

Screen Style: Hot Fuzz

If you haven't seen this gem of a police comedy, I highly recommend it. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, when brought together with director Edgar Wright, are absolutely genius. Granted, the last 20 minutes definitely deserve the world's biggest salty language warning, but it's not much worse than everyone's favourite scene from The King's Speech.

If you listen to Sgt. Frank Butterman (Jim Broadbent), then you know that rural policing isn't easy. But getting some of the look from Hot Fuzz definitely is. So while you may never match Nicholas Angel's skill in advanced cycling, you can at least riff on some of the finer points of the film's style.

Sandford Police Badge patch
I know this one is a bit obvious, but without being able to track down a nifty vintage constabulary badge, having the patch of the made-up Sandford PD badge is a good second choice. Also, take a look at this gallery of old badges. I wish you could collect these easily.

Kid-sized PC Helmet
I used to have one of these as a kid. No joke. And what a cute costume this would make with a little cape...it would be so easy!

Cornetto Classico
Considering this is part of the Cornetto trilogy, it's only fitting to down a few of these when watching the movie. Plus, how many of these do Pegg and Frost actually get through during the course of the film?

Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily)
'You should get some house plants...I've been tending my peace lily for three years: oxygenates the room, helps you think, relieves stress, it's needs are simple.' That's all you need to say, really.

Small Raku Houses (Rowena Brown at Gallery Fifty Five)
It may not be a perfectly scaled model village, but you could definitely recreate a stylish miniature hamlet on your mantelpiece with these gorgeous pieces by Rowena Brown.

Swan brooch
Luckily, this swan won't be escaping to run riot any time soon. But for all the cuteness of this brooch, don't forget: a swan could kill a man...or break a man's arm.

New Englander Sock Garters
Channel your inner ballet-dancing, supermarket-managing, homicidal fun runner (or just your inner Timothy Dalton) with these sock garters from Dapper Dean on Etsy. They're to die for.

Time for a Change of Title

Looks like I'm no longer The Girl Who Never Wins Anything. Thanks to random.com and the lovely Diana over at exPress-O, I won a $50 gift certificate for Shopbop.com
Of course now is the hear part: choosing what to walk away with! Here are a few things that have caught my eye...

Diane von Furstenburg...not even with the gift card...
The Madewell Lucky Charm Kerchief is awesomely cute.
Feel the Piece icon top...this screams 'me!'
The Splendid Shirting top. Maybe in red; maybe with a pencil skirt.
I may have too many slouchy tees now, but
I love the Nation LTD boulder Henley.
And, The Selby: because who doesn't want a  fun book with good pictures?
So the real question now is: what do I buy!? The top two choices make their way into my lovely pile of stuff. Decisions, decisions...
